UPDATE: Homeowners risk serious health issues and costly repairs due to a common mistake when installing thermal blinds. Experts urgently warn that improper placement could lead to harmful mold growth as winter sets in.

Thermal blinds, designed to keep homes warm and reduce energy bills, must be installed correctly to prevent moisture buildup. Fitting blinds too close to windows traps condensation, creating an ideal environment for mold. John Parks, COO of Advanced Insulation System in San Diego, emphasizes that this installation error significantly reduces airflow, exacerbating the issue.

“The warm air inside the home hits the cold glass, moisture gets trapped, and condensation starts to form,” Parks cautioned. He highlighted that over time, trapped moisture leads to mold growth around window sills and frames, posing health risks to residents.

To prevent these issues, homeowners should ensure a minimum of a 1-inch space between the blinds and the glass. Parks also advises sealing and insulating windows properly to mitigate cold air leaks that worsen condensation. “If you live in a humid area or notice fogging, a small dehumidifier nearby can help keep things dry,” he added.

For existing mold issues, Parks recommends using 30% white vinegar, available at Walmart. This natural cleaner is effective against mold and less harmful than traditional bleach. Homeowners can spray the vinegar on affected areas, allowing it to sit for at least half an hour before scrubbing.

As a key part of winter home maintenance, Parks urges residents to check the caulking and weatherstripping around windows. Over time, these materials can wear out, allowing cold drafts to enter. “Re-caulking and replacing old weatherstripping make a big difference,” he stated, recommending 3M Marine Adhesive Polyurethane Sealant from The Home Depot for this task.

Additionally, applying clear insulation film over windows can help regulate temperature and prevent moisture buildup. This simple step can significantly enhance the effectiveness of thermal blinds.

With winter fast approaching, taking these measures can drastically improve your home’s insulation and comfort. Immediate action is crucial to avoid the dual threats of mold and increased heating costs.
