Rookie Cooper Flagg Sparks Mavericks’ First NBA Win, 139-129
UPDATE: Rookie Cooper Flagg electrified the Dallas Mavericks with a stunning performance, leading the team to a crucial 139-129 victory over the Toronto Raptors on October 29, 2023. This win marks the Mavericks’ first triumph of the NBA season after an 0-2 start, bringing much-needed excitement to the American Airlines Center.
Flagg, the No. 1 draft pick, dazzled fans with a spectacular and-1 slam dunk that sent the crowd into a frenzy. “The fans have showed up for the first three games, and I thought tonight was really the first time we gave ’em something to be excited for,” Flagg stated after the game. He finished with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, showcasing why he is a player to watch this season.
The Mavericks turned the tide with a balanced offensive attack, featuring seven players scoring in double figures. Power forward Anthony Davis led the charge with 25 points, while guard D’Angelo Russell contributed 24 points and a team-high 6 assists. Russell, who thrived as a sixth man after sitting out the previous game, emphasized the energy Flagg brings to the team: “When he’s getting the crowd going like that, our team feeds off it.”
Flagg’s achievement is historic. At just 18 years and 309 days old, he became the fifth-youngest player in NBA history to score at least 20 points in a game, joining legends like Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. Notably, Flagg is now one of only two players to reach this milestone without committing a turnover before turning 19.
During a pivotal third-quarter run, Flagg’s influence was undeniable. He scored seven points and dished out three assists, helping Dallas erase a seven-point deficit and build a double-digit lead. The momentum surged as he delivered a highlight-reel dunk that had teammates leaping from the bench in celebration.
“As soon as he took off, I knew it was going to be butter. He’s bringing his energy, getting above the rim,” said Mavs center Dereck Lively II, who initiated the fast break leading to Flagg’s dunk.
After struggling with offensive efficiency in their first two games, the Mavericks found their groove, scoring 25 fast-break points and dominating the paint with 70 points. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, hitting 29 of 39 attempts.
Flagg’s excitement was palpable post-game. “It feels great. I’m excited. We want to build off tonight,” he declared, emphasizing the team’s desire to use this win as a foundation for improvement moving forward.
The Mavericks are now looking to maintain this momentum as they prepare for their next game, aiming to build on this victory and elevate their season standings. Fans are eager to see if Flagg can continue his impressive form and lead Dallas to further success in the days ahead.
