Jack Ciattarelli Gains Democratic Endorsements in NJ Governor Race
Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli is amassing a notable number of endorsements from Democratic officials in his campaign for the New Jersey governorship. Most recently, on October 21, 2023, he received support from the Brooklyn-based political organization known as the New Era Democrats. This endorsement adds to a growing list of at least eight Democratic endorsements that Ciattarelli has secured as he challenges incumbent Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
Celia Iervasi, president of the New Era Democrats, expressed confidence in Ciattarelli’s leadership potential. “We are proud to endorse Jack Ciattarelli for Governor of New Jersey,” Iervasi stated. She emphasized the pressing financial challenges faced by residents, noting, “As life continues to become unaffordable for the working class and New Jersey continues to be one of the highest taxed states in the country, Jack is the right person that is needed to make life more affordable for the residents of the Garden State.”
This endorsement reflects a broader trend, as several Democratic mayors and officials have publicly backed Ciattarelli. Notable endorsements include those from North Bergen Mayor Nick Sacco, Commissioner Allen Pascual, Dover Mayor Jim Dodd, and Garfield Mayor Everett Garnto Jr.. Additionally, Branchville Councilman Jeff Lewis, Branchville Mayor Anthony Frato, and former Hudson County Democratic Chairman Anthony Vainieri have also expressed their support, according to a list compiled by Newsweek. Following his endorsement of Ciattarelli, Garnto transitioned to the Republican Party.
The New Era Democrats are known for their willingness to endorse candidates across party lines when they see fit. Their past endorsements include Republican candidates such as Lee Zeldin, who ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York in 2022, as well as Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn). The group has also supported more left-leaning candidates like former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
A recent Rutgers-Eagleton poll indicates that Sherrill currently holds a narrow lead over Ciattarelli, with 50% support compared to 45% for Ciattarelli among likely voters. This is a notable shift from earlier in the campaign when Sherrill commanded a lead of over 20 points in June.
As the election approaches, Ciattarelli’s ability to attract bipartisan support could play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of the race. The growing number of endorsements from Democratic figures suggests a potential shift in voter sentiment, highlighting the importance of affordability and governance in the minds of New Jersey voters.
