Jays Fans Boo Ohtani, Chant ‘Don’t Need You’ in Game 1
UPDATE: Toronto Blue Jays fans delivered a resounding message to Shohei Ohtani during Game 1 of the World Series on October 27, 2023, at Rogers Centre, expressing their displeasure over his decision to join the Los Angeles Dodgers instead of their team. The crowd’s chants of “We don’t need you!” echoed as Ohtani stepped up to bat in the ninth inning, making it clear that lingering resentment was palpable.
Before signing a staggering $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers, Ohtani met with Blue Jays officials on December 4, 2023, at their spring training complex in Dunedin, Florida. The Toronto Blue Jays had high hopes for the two-way superstar, but ultimately lost out to the Dodgers.
During pregame introductions, fans booed Ohtani loudly, setting the tone for a night filled with tension. Toronto manager John Schneider humorously referenced Ohtani’s visit, joking that he wanted the player to return a Blue Jays hat and jacket he took for his dog.
“Don’t poke the bear,”
warned Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt regarding the chants aimed at Ohtani. Meanwhile, third baseman Ernie Clement remarked, “I couldn’t help but laugh. We have the guys we have, and the guys we have have done a hell of a job. I don’t think we need any more of what we have right now.”
The atmosphere intensified as Ohtani walked in his at-bat, narrowly escaping a pickoff attempt by left-hander Eric Lauer, only to be ultimately stranded as the Blue Jays dominated with an 11-4 victory.
Blue Jays outfielder George Springer commented on the situation, stating, “At the end of the day, Shohei Ohtani is an unbelievable baseball player. Any team that he would be on would be awesome. But he’s over there and not here.” He acknowledged Ohtani’s exceptional talent, noting, “He’s one of the best baseball players ever, and he’s got 15 years to go.”
Despite the jeers, Ohtani showcased his skills, hitting a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Braydon Fisher, reminding fans of what they missed. This marked his fourth home run in just two games, following a stellar performance in the NL Championship Series where he hit three homers and struck out ten batters.
The emotional charge from the fans, the competitive spirit on the field, and Ohtani’s undeniable talent created a charged atmosphere in Toronto. As the World Series continues, all eyes will be on how the interactions between fans and players evolve.
The Blue Jays’ emphatic win sets a powerful tone for the remainder of the series, but the shadow of Ohtani’s decision lingers on, fueling further excitement and anticipation among baseball fans.
