Heat Stand by Rozier Amid Indefinite Leave After Arrest
UPDATE: The Miami Heat are rallying behind guard Terry Rozier, who has been placed on indefinite leave following his arrest by federal agents on Thursday. Rozier faces serious charges related to an alleged sports betting scheme connected to his performance during a game on March 23, 2023, while he was with the Charlotte Hornets.
Rozier’s absence was palpable during the team’s morning shootaround practice in Memphis, Tennessee. Heat captain Bam Adebayo expressed the team’s sentiments, stating, “You support him through and through. That’s our brother at the end of the day.” The Heat are now preparing for their game against the Memphis Grizzlies without their teammate, acknowledging the emotional impact of his situation.
Rozier, along with several others, including Chauncey Billups, coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was arrested as part of a broad investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games allegedly linked to organized crime. “Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this.”
According to prosecutors, Rozier conspired with friends to manipulate bets based on his in-game performance, specifically revealing to a childhood friend, Deniro Laster, that he would sit out of a game due to injury. This insider information reportedly led to significant financial gains for bettors who placed wagers on Rozier’s performance indicators. The indictment claims Rozier facilitated Laster’s travel to collect the proceeds from these bets.
The Heat convened shortly after Rozier’s arrest to discuss how best to support their teammate. “We’ve had a lot of time with him,” said forward Jaime Jaquez Jr.. “There’s a lot of stuff that we don’t know. Just waiting for more information to come out.”
Rozier had been in uniform for Miami’s season opener on October 25, 2023, against Orlando but did not see playing time. His current legal troubles emerged suddenly, leaving the team grappling with the necessity of moving forward without him. Spoelstra emphasized the need for the team to compartmentalize their focus: “The league doesn’t wait. It doesn’t stop for you. You have to learn how to compartmentalize and focus on the most immediate thing.”
As the Heat prepare for their game against the Grizzlies, fans and analysts alike are watching closely. The implications of this arrest extend beyond Rozier, affecting the dynamics of the team and raising questions about the broader issue of gambling in sports.
Rozier’s attorney has denied any wrongdoing, but as the situation develops, the Heat will continue to support their teammate while navigating the challenges that lie ahead. Keep an eye on this evolving story as more information emerges.
