Trump Accuses Canada of ‘Illegally Influencing’ Supreme Court

UPDATE: President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on Canada early Friday morning, accusing the nation of attempting to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court. This accusation follows a controversial video advertisement funded by the government of Ontario that criticizes Trump’s tariff policies.

The ad, released last week, features excerpts from a speech by former President Ronald Reagan, highlighting the economic damage caused by tariffs. Trump’s outrage intensified after he abruptly halted trade negotiations with Canada on Thursday night, citing the ad as a primary reason.

“CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!!” Trump declared on his social media platform Truth Social. “They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.”

In his post, Trump claimed that Canada has a history of tariff violations, stating that they charge American farmers as much as 400%. He continued, “Now they, and other countries, can’t take advantage of the U.S. any longer. Thank you to the Ronald Reagan Foundation for exposing this FRAUD.”

While Trump insists the ad mischaracterizes Reagan’s stance on tariffs, the lines used in the advertisement were indeed taken from a 1987 radio speech by Reagan, albeit not in the same sequence. Notably, Reagan was also a strong advocate for international free trade, having dismantled numerous protectionist policies during his presidency.

This escalating tension between the U.S. and Canada comes at a critical time, as trade relations are already strained. The ad’s release has injected additional volatility into ongoing discussions, with both nations now facing a potential trade standoff.

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the implications for U.S.-Canada relations and the possible impact on the Supreme Court case mentioned by Trump. The fallout could affect not only trade policies but also diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
