Brazilian Influencer Arrested for Alleged Drug Trafficking
A Brazilian influencer, known for her online presence, has been arrested following allegations of leading an interstate drug trafficking and money laundering operation. Melissa Said, who has over 340,000 followers on Instagram, was apprehended at a friend’s home in Bahia after being on the run since Wednesday. The arrest followed a series of police raids targeting her properties, as reported by the Brazilian news outlet Correio.
The 23-year-old influencer is accused of being the kingpin of a significant criminal syndicate involved in the distribution of cannabis and money laundering activities. Authorities allege that Said played an active role in facilitating and promoting the smuggling of illegal drugs in the states of Bahia and Sao Paulo. Her involvement was uncovered during an investigation initiated by police in 2024, prompted by reports of her being caught with drugs at an airport. Additionally, she is accused of advising her followers on how to bypass law enforcement during drug transport and distributing “kits” containing joints in public areas.
Police Operations and Findings
Wednesday’s raids were part of Operation Erva Afetiva—a name reflective of Said’s Instagram bio, which translates to “weed-loving.” The operation culminated in the arrest of three alleged accomplices, one of whom faces charges of drug trafficking after police seized 1.4 kilograms of “skank” marijuana. Authorities also recovered 270 grams of hashish, various small quantities of marijuana, digital scales, plastic bags, mobile phones, bank cards, and two vehicles believed to have been used in the operation.
The police have not disclosed the identity of the third individual in custody. Following her initial evasion of capture, Said was finally arrested on Thursday. Ernandes Junior, director of the State Department for Prevention and Suppression of Drug Trafficking, emphasized the operation’s objective, stating, “The objective of this operation is to combat drug trafficking, with the main target being a digital influencer who promotes crime.” He further noted that Said’s alleged activities included not only promoting drug use but also selling narcotics with suppliers from Sao Paulo.
Legal Implications and Future Proceedings
The investigation into Said’s alleged drug trafficking involvement remains active. If convicted, she could face a prison sentence of up to 25 years. Following her arrest, she is expected to undergo questioning with her lawyer before a forensic examination takes place. Afterward, she will remain in custody until her hearing, according to Correio.
In a recent Instagram video posted on October 2, 2023, Said discussed marijuana legalization while appearing to smoke what looked like a joint. This public stance on cannabis legalization has been a hallmark of her social media persona. Said was previously married to fellow influencer Tássio Bacelar, who tragically died in a bicycle accident in October 2023.
As the story develops, it raises broader questions about the intersection of social media influence and illegal activities, highlighting the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring digital platforms.
