Texas Leads States with Most Miss USA Wins Ahead of Pageant
The 74th annual Miss USA pageant is set to take place in Reno, Nevada, on October 24, 2023, highlighting the ongoing competition among states for the prestigious title. Historically, Texas emerges as the most successful state, having won the Miss USA crown a remarkable 10 times, a testament to its dominance in the pageant’s history.
Texas has produced several notable winners, including Miss Texas 1995, Chelsi Smith, and Miss Texas 2022, R’Bonney Gabriel, who both went on to win the Miss Universe title. The state’s impressive streak from 1985 to 1989, known as the “Texas Aces,” solidified its reputation in the pageant world. The list of Miss Texas titleholders who secured the Miss USA title includes:
– 1977: Kimberly Tomes
– 1985: Laura Martinez Herring
– 1986: Christy Fichtner
– 1987: Michelle Royer
– 1988: Courtney Gibbs
– 1989: Gretchen Polhemus
– 1995: Chelsi Smith
– 2001: Kandace Krueger
– 2008: Crystle Stewart

Following Texas is California, with a total of six Miss USA wins. The state has claimed the title in every decade since the 1950s, except for the 2000s. Its most recent winner, Alyssa Campanella, took home the title in 2011. The complete list of Miss California titleholders who won Miss USA is as follows:

Hawaii’s success in the Miss USA competition is notable as well. The state recently assumed its fifth title after Miss USA 2023, Noelia Voigt, resigned three months before her reign ended. This unprecedented occurrence in the pageant’s history allowed first runner-up Savannah Gankiewicz to take over. Hawaii’s winners include:
– 1962: Macel Wilson
– 1972: Tanya Wilson
– 1978: Judi Andersen
– 1997: Brook Lee
– 2023: Savannah Gankiewicz
Michigan has also seen success, with four Miss USA wins, the most recent being Alma Cooper in 2024. Notably, Carole Gist became the first African American woman to win the title in 1990. The list of Miss Michigan titleholders includes:
– 1990: Carole Gist
– 1993: Kenya Moore
– 2010: Rima Fakih
– 2024: Alma Cooper
The District of Columbia has had remarkable back-to-back wins, with Deshauna Barber winning in 2016 and Kára McCullough following her in 2017. This achievement is particularly significant given the district’s lack of Senate representation. The winners from the District of Columbia are:
– 1964: Bobbi Johnson
– 2002: Shauntay Hinton
– 2016: Deshauna Barber
– 2017: Kára McCullough

As the upcoming pageant approaches, 18 states continue to pursue their first wins. The competition promises to showcase talent and beauty, with participants eager to change their states’ records. The Miss USA pageant remains a significant cultural event, reflecting not only the beauty of its contestants but also their diverse backgrounds and achievements.
