Amazon Aims to Replace 600K Jobs with Robots by 2033
UPDATE: Amazon is making a bold move to potentially replace 600,000 jobs with robots by 2033, according to a report from The New York Times. The e-commerce giant’s automation team predicts that by 2027, it will avoid hiring over 160,000 U.S. workers due to increased reliance on automation.
This shift could save Amazon approximately 30 cents on every item it picks, packs, and delivers. As the company anticipates doubling its product sales, the integration of robotics is designed to streamline operations and reduce labor costs significantly.
The leaked documents indicate that Amazon’s robotics division plans to automate up to 75% of its operations, a move that could soon see robots outnumbering humans in their warehouses. In preparation for potential backlash, Amazon is reportedly developing PR strategies to reshape its public image, emphasizing community engagement rather than automation’s impact on employment.
In response to the leaked information, Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the documents present an “incomplete” picture of the company’s hiring strategy, asserting that Amazon has created more jobs in the U.S. over the last decade than any other company. Nantel highlighted the recent announcement of 250,000 positions for the upcoming holiday season.
Despite these reassurances, the push towards automation has raised alarm. Senator Bernie Sanders reacted strongly to the report, warning that “Big Tech oligarchs are coming for your job.” He recently released a report indicating that AI and automation could threaten nearly 100 million U.S. jobs in the next decade.
While some research suggests that the anticipated job losses from AI may not have materialized yet, the conversation around automation continues to be urgent. A recent study from Yale University and the Brookings Institution concluded that the advent of generative AI has not yet dramatically altered the employment landscape since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.
With Amazon’s significant investment in robotics and automation, the landscape of the workforce is poised for transformation. As the company moves forward with its plans, the implications for workers and the job market could be profound.
NEXT: As Amazon continues its automation strategy, attention will focus on how these developments impact job opportunities within the company and across the industry. The ongoing dialogue about AI’s role in the future of work remains critical, as labor advocates and policymakers respond to these seismic shifts.
