Civil Rights Leader Bill Patterson Dies at 94, Leaving Legacy

UPDATE: Civil rights leader and former East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) Director Bill Patterson has died at the age of 94, confirmed early Tuesday. Known as the “Conscience of the District,” Patterson’s death marks a significant loss for the Oakland community and beyond.
Patterson, the first Black director at EBMUD, dedicated 27 years to advocating for equity among the utility’s 1.4 million customers, focusing on public health initiatives, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. His work included addressing lead contamination in schools and protecting the Mokelumne watershed.
EBMUD Board President Marguerite Young expressed deep sorrow over Patterson’s passing, stating, “Bill Patterson was a devoted public servant whose exemplary leadership and thoughtful voice strengthened our board and enhanced our ability to serve our East Bay community.” She emphasized his integrity, collaborative spirit, and the profound impact he had on residents.
Patterson’s contributions extended beyond EBMUD; he was a three-term president of the Oakland NAACP, where he championed inclusion and investment in Oakland’s Black community. Current Ward 6 director Valerie Lewis noted, “Bill’s legacy is woven into the fabric of EBMUD and the East Bay,” recognizing him as a mentor and advocate for informed decision-making.
Newly elected Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee also shared heartfelt memories of Patterson, describing him as a “positive force in the lives of generations of Oakland youth.” She recalled their personal bond, particularly the moment he held her grandfather’s Bible during her swearing-in ceremony as mayor, symbolizing his mentorship and commitment to the community.
“Even as our city faced tremendous challenges, Bill never stopped making this city better for all of us,” Mayor Lee stated.
Patterson’s legacy will undoubtedly influence future generations as community leaders and residents reflect on his tireless efforts for justice and equity. His death leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his impact will persist through the lives he touched and the policies he championed.
As the community mourns, officials and residents are encouraged to honor Patterson’s legacy by continuing his work in civil rights and community service. The EBMUD Board plans to hold a memorial service to celebrate his life and contributions in the coming weeks.
