Meta Cuts 600 Jobs in AI Division to Enhance Efficiency
Meta Platforms has reduced its workforce by approximately 600 jobs within its Meta Superintelligence Labs division. This decision aims to streamline operations and accelerate advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The job cuts were communicated to employees by AI chief Alexandr Wang in an internal memo, according to a report from Bloomberg.
The layoffs predominantly affect the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team and various product-related AI and infrastructure units. Despite these reductions, Meta plans to continue hiring for its TBD Lab team, which is also part of the Meta Superintelligence Labs.
In his memo, Wang emphasized that downsizing the team will facilitate quicker decision-making processes and empower the remaining employees with greater responsibility and influence. He stated, “The changes are necessary to maintain our competitive edge.”
Bloomberg further detailed that the TBD Lab team comprises recently hired, high-salaried AI professionals, including talent acquired from competitors like OpenAI. Meta has encouraged those affected by the layoffs to explore other opportunities within the company and has reiterated its commitment to ongoing recruitment for its AI divisions.
Meta has undergone a significant restructuring of its AI division, splitting the Meta Superintelligence Labs into four distinct teams in August 2023. This restructuring marks the fourth major realignment of the AI unit within the past six months. The company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously announced plans in July 2023 to invest billions in AI computing infrastructure, including the construction of large data center clusters.
In a notable move, Meta raised its projected capital expenditure for 2025 to a range of $64 billion to $72 billion, a revision from an earlier estimate of $60 billion to $65 billion made in January 2023. This financial commitment underscores the company’s aggressive strategy to bolster its position in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
As Meta navigates these changes, the impact on its workforce and the implications for its AI development strategy will continue to unfold, shaping the future of the social media giant in the competitive landscape of technology.
