Kansas Stars Peterson, Dybantsa Downplay NBA Draft Buzz
UPDATE: Kansas guard Darryn Peterson and BYU wing AJ Dybantsa are both top prospects for the 2026 NBA Draft, but they are focused on their college seasons rather than draft speculation. Speaking at Big 12 Media Day in Kansas City on October 11, 2023, both players downplayed their potential No. 1 and No. 2 draft positions.
Peterson, a 6-foot-6 five-star recruit projected to go No. 1 in ESPN’s latest mock draft, emphasized his commitment to helping the Jayhawks succeed this season. “I handle it by not even paying any attention to it,” Peterson stated. “I’m just going to go out and play and win games.”
In recognition of his potential, Peterson was named Big 12 preseason freshman of the year and secured a spot on the all-Big 12 preseason first team.
Dybantsa, a 6-foot-9 standout expected to be drafted second, recently gained attention after scoring 30 points in a 90-89 exhibition loss to Nebraska. He reflected on the experience, saying, “It was the first college game for the freshmen… I learned a lot.”
The road game against the Cornhuskers provided Dybantsa with valuable insights, as he navigated the pressures of competing at a high level. “I like the Big 12 level, but I learned a lot. I felt more comfortable getting into an exhibition and just getting to [compete],” he explained.
Despite the growing speculation about their NBA futures, both players share a similar mindset. Dybantsa noted, “I don’t think he [Peterson] is too worried about [going No. 1 overall]. I think he’s just really trying to prove himself as a college player.”
Peterson reiterated his focus on leadership, stating, “I lead by example… I think that’s good for the team if you can see a young guy coming in and doing that.”
While attention centered on Peterson and Dybantsa, UCF’s coach Johnny Dawkins highlighted another rising star, freshman Cameron Boozer. After his team’s 96-71 exhibition loss to Duke, Dawkins flew to Kansas City to participate in media day. He praised Boozer, a two-time national Gatorade player of the year and projected No. 3 pick, stating, “He’s a great basketball player and he still has room to grow.”
Dawkins further emphasized Boozer’s competitive spirit, noting, “When I saw [Boozer] raise his level, I knew exactly who he’s going to be. He’s going to be a great college player and he’s going to be a terrific pro.”
The Big 12 is brimming with talent this season, and all eyes will be on Peterson, Dybantsa, and Boozer as they strive for excellence on the court. Fans and analysts will eagerly watch how their performances unfold, shaping the draft narrative as the college basketball season progresses.
