Former Bill Gates Climate Team Launches Nonprofit Clean Economy Project
Bill Gates’ former climate policy team has established a new nonprofit organization called the Clean Economy Project. This initiative follows the disbandment of the energy policy team at Breakthrough Energy in March 2023, which resulted in the departure of dozens of staff members. The new organization aims to promote clean energy solutions as a cost-effective alternative to fossil fuels, with a vision for a sustainable energy future.
The creation of the Clean Economy Project comes after Breakthrough Energy’s lobbying group was cut, a decision attributed to the limited prospects for progress under the then-Trump administration. According to a report by the New York Times, this strategic move was part of a broader reevaluation of the organization’s direction.
New Goals and Leadership
The Clean Economy Project, informally referred to as CleanEcon, is supported by over ten undisclosed funders, including philanthropists and venture capitalists. The organization consists of a dedicated team of ten individuals, with a clear mission that revolves around three primary objectives: accelerating the development of energy projects, fostering innovation to reduce costs, and mitigating risks for private investments in clean industries.
Leading the charge is Aliya Haq, who served as the vice president of U.S. policy and advocacy at Breakthrough Energy for nearly six years. As the president of the Clean Economy Project, Haq is positioned to leverage her experience and connections to drive the organization’s initiatives forward.
The nonprofit aims to address the urgent need for a transition to cleaner energy sources, especially as global awareness of climate change intensifies. By focusing on reducing the financial barriers associated with clean energy projects, the Clean Economy Project aims to foster a more competitive environment against traditional fossil fuel markets.
The establishment of this organization reflects a growing commitment within the philanthropic and venture capital communities to invest in sustainable energy solutions. As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change, initiatives like the Clean Economy Project represent a significant step towards a greener future.
