Women’s Professional Baseball League Announces Inaugural Cities

URGENT UPDATE: The Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL) has just announced that New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco will host the four teams competing in its inaugural season. This groundbreaking decision was made public on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone for women in sports as the league prepares for its debut in 2026.
This new venture, co-founded by Justine Siegal, the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball team, will bring professional women’s baseball back to the forefront—over six decades after the dissolution of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The WPBL aims to create a vibrant circuit with a regular season, playoffs, and an all-star game, engaging fans across the nation.
With an initial roster of four teams, each composed of 15 players, the league has confirmed that the top 100 players from this summer’s tryouts will be part of the upcoming draft. Among those vying for a spot in the league are notable figures such as Mo’ne Davis, the former Little League star, Kelsie Whitmore from USA Baseball, and Japanese pitcher Ayami Sato. This recruitment not only highlights the talent pool available but also the inclusive nature of the league aiming to elevate women’s sports.
All games during the inaugural season will take place at a neutral venue, which the league plans to announce later. This strategic choice underscores the WPBL’s commitment to providing a fair playing field for all teams involved.
Officials selected these four cities for their substantial market size and enthusiastic fan base. “Each of these cities are storied sports cities,” Siegal stated, “and we can’t wait to connect with the fans who live there and baseball fans across the country.” This reflects a strong focus on building a community around women’s baseball, fostering excitement and engagement from the get-go.
As the league gears up for its first season, the anticipation continues to build. Fans are encouraged to keep an eye on further announcements, including the exact date for the draft and the unveiling of the neutral venue. The WPBL is not just a sports league; it’s a movement aiming to redefine women’s roles in professional sports and inspire future generations.
Stay tuned for more updates as the WPBL prepares to make history in the world of women’s sports!
