Connellsville Triumphs 56-12 Over Uniontown to Retain Rivalry Trophy
Connellsville celebrated a decisive victory over Uniontown, winning 56-12 in a non-conference football game on October 27, 2023. This match, which took place at Connellsville Stadium, marked the latest chapter in Fayette County’s oldest football rivalry, ensuring that the prized “Old Coal Bucket” will remain in Connellsville for another year. With this win, the Falcons have now secured victory in the last seven meetings against Uniontown, extending their lead in the series to 41-36-9 after 86 contests.
The Connellsville Falcons showcased a dominant performance, particularly on the offensive side. Running back Jayden Mickens led the charge with an impressive display, gaining 200 yards on 20 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Connellsville’s coach, Jace McClean, credited the offensive line for their performance, stating, “Jayden ran the ball hard, but it starts with the line. They were pulling, picking up guys and opening up some holes for him.”
Connellsville’s passing game also proved effective, as quarterback Caden Matthews completed 5 of 10 passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns. Notably, wide receiver Christian Thomas caught two passes for 109 yards, with both receptions resulting in touchdowns. Coach McClean praised Matthews for his ability to adapt during the game, saying, “Whenever they stopped the run, Caden took charge… he can make some magic happen.”
Uniontown, which now holds a record of 2-7, initially took the lead with a touchdown on their opening drive. Quarterback Brayden Hinzy connected with Taylor Galloway for a 19-yard touchdown pass, putting the Red Raiders ahead 6-0 just a few minutes into the game. Despite the early momentum, Uniontown struggled to maintain their offensive rhythm.
As the first quarter progressed, Connellsville quickly countered. Matthews found Linkon Keller for a 31-yard touchdown, putting the Falcons ahead 7-6. Connellsville extended their lead with another touchdown, as Mickens’ solid running set up a crucial 14-6 advantage. Uniontown coach Tim Bukowski expressed frustration over missed opportunities, noting, “We were dominated on both sides of the ball at the line of scrimmage.”
The Falcons continued to build their lead, with Keller recovering an onside kick that led to another score by Mickens. By halftime, Connellsville had established a commanding 28-6 lead. The momentum did not shift in the second half, as Matthews connected with Thomas for a long touchdown pass, extending the lead to 35-6.
Defensively, Connellsville was relentless. They forced a fumble that turned the tide in their favor, and Mickens added another touchdown to push the score to 42-6. The Falcons’ strong defensive efforts were highlighted by players like Cooper Lembo, who, despite being undersized, has consistently delivered outstanding performances both defensively and on the offensive line.
As the game progressed, Connellsville’s dominance became increasingly evident. They rested several starters during the fourth quarter, allowing younger players to gain valuable experience. Cooper Wilson capped off the scoring with a five-yard run, concluding the match with a final score of 56-12.
Uniontown managed to score a second touchdown late in the game, but the outcome was already decided. The Falcons’ victory solidifies their status in this storied rivalry, and as Coach McClean noted, the experience gained by younger players will be beneficial for the future.
