Woman Assaulted in Chicago Loop, Good Samaritan Saves Her
UPDATE: A woman was brutally assaulted in Chicago’s Loop on Wednesday night, but quick action from a Good Samaritan prevented a potentially worse outcome. The terrifying incident took place around 7:20 p.m. as Sierra Ruggiero, 25, was walking home from the La Salle Blue Line station on Ida B. Wells Drive.
According to Chicago police reports, Ruggiero was pushed onto a busy street by a man on a bicycle who attempted to sexually assault her. In a dramatic turn of events, Alx Taylor, a 21-year-old witness, yelled at the attacker, causing him to flee west on his bike. “Once he ran away, she came up to me, she checked to see if I was OK. She was the kindest soul,” Ruggiero said, expressing her gratitude toward Taylor for her immediate support.
Ruggiero, who suffered bruises to her legs and tailbone, revealed that the traumatic experience has left a lasting impact. “I don’t think I actually will ever fully mentally recover from this,” she remarked. The assault has heightened her awareness of safety in the city, leading to fears about potential threats as she navigates her daily life.
Witness Taylor described the moment the attacker sped by her, nearly knocking her over. “It was awful just to see, but I felt awful that she experienced that, so I felt like I had to stay with her,” she said. Taylor stayed with Ruggiero until paramedics arrived and ensured she was not alone.
The attacker, described as wearing all black and a blue surgical face mask, remains at large. Ruggiero is now actively seeking security camera footage of the incident to assist in the investigation. She has also been made aware of reports concerning the so-called “Loop puncher,” a man linked to several unprovoked assaults on women in the area.
Despite her previous vigilance—keeping her phone secure, avoiding headphones, and using a large water bottle for potential self-defense—Ruggiero was caught off guard. “No matter how safe you are or how protected you think you are, something can still happen,” she said, indicating a shift in her approach to personal safety.
Ruggiero has expressed her intention to carry pepper spray or another self-defense tool in the future. She shared her story on TikTok to raise awareness among other women and the community, emphasizing the need for vigilance and support in light of this alarming incident.
The Chicago Police are continuing their investigation into the attack, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. As Ruggiero processes her experience, she hopes to find justice and prevent similar incidents from occurring in her community.
