Baylor Bears Fall Short Against TCU Horned Frogs in Riveting Rivalry

Baylor University’s football team faced a challenging matchup against their long-time rivals, the TCU Horned Frogs, on October 14, 2023. Despite entering the game with a five-game road win streak, the Bears were unable to maintain their momentum and suffered a 42-36 defeat at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. This loss marks another disappointment for Baylor, as they sought only their third victory over TCU in the last ten years.
The first half proved detrimental for Baylor, with the team struggling to find their rhythm. Starting tight end Trigg, who led all tight ends in receiving yards prior to the game, was largely absent from the offensive playbook, registering no catches by halftime. It was not until the third quarter, specifically at the 7:29 mark, that Trigg made his first reception, ultimately finishing the game with three catches for 56 yards.
Quarterback Robertson, who came into the game leading the nation in passing yards and touchdowns, faced significant challenges against TCU’s defense. Although he amassed 318 yards and threw two touchdowns, his completion rate dipped to just 48 percent, far below his season average. Compounding his struggles, Robertson threw three interceptions, limiting Baylor’s offensive potential at critical moments.
Baylor’s special teams also encountered setbacks. Late in the third quarter, Josh Cameron returned a punt for 68 yards, setting up a potential scoring opportunity. However, the play was negated due to a block in the back penalty, illustrating the missed chances that plagued the Bears throughout the game.
The Bears’ offensive production was overshadowed by TCU’s explosive plays. A notable highlight for TCU came early in the fourth quarter when running back Trent Battle burst through the Baylor defense, sprinting 65 yards for a touchdown, which further deepened Baylor’s deficit.
Weather conditions added an unexpected twist to the match, as a lightning storm prompted a delay with 13:42 remaining in the game, while TCU held a 35-21 lead. Despite the interruption, Baylor managed to make a late-game surge with a fumble return for a touchdown by Keaton Thomas and another touchdown pass from Robertson, narrowing TCU’s lead to just six points. Unfortunately for Baylor, it was not enough to secure a victory.
With this outcome, Baylor’s record now stands at 4-3 for the season and 2-2 in Big 12 conference play, while TCU improves to 5-2 overall and also holds a 2-2 record in the conference. The rivalry continues to be a challenging battleground for Baylor, who will need to regroup as they look toward their upcoming games.
As both teams reflect on this intense matchup, TCU celebrates another victory in this storied rivalry, while Baylor faces the pressing challenge of addressing its shortcomings in the coming weeks.
