Brewers’ Pat Murphy Blames Cubs Series for NLCS Sweep by Dodgers
UPDATE: Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy has pointed to the grueling series against the Chicago Cubs as a major factor in his team’s NLCS sweep by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Following a tense five-game battle with the Cubs, which concluded on October 10, the exhausted Brewers faced a rapid turnaround, ultimately falling to the Dodgers in a decisive four-game series.
The Brewers were forced into high-pressure situations during the Cubs series, which depleted their pitching resources. In stark contrast, the Dodgers breezed through the NLDS, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in just four games, allowing their bullpen to remain fresh for the critical matchup.
Murphy described the Game 1 loss at home as a significant blow. He stated, “The emotional series with the Cubs really zapped a lot out of us. We had to come back and play right away, and losing a one-run game just took us off it a little bit. The Dodgers’ pitching performances put the hammer down,” he explained after the Brewers’ Game 4 defeat.
The impact of the Cubs series was evident in the Brewers’ performance; they managed to score only a single run in each game of the NLCS. Known for their offensive prowess during the regular season, the Brewers struggled to produce runs, failing to demonstrate their typical patient approach at the plate. Instead, they often chased bad pitches and missed opportunities to make quality contact.
While the Dodgers’ offense did not shine throughout the series, leaving multiple runners on base, they capitalized on the hittable pitches from Brewers pitchers to secure their victories. The disparity in energy levels and performance between the two teams was clear.
As the Brewers reflect on their season, fans and analysts alike are left questioning the toll taken by the emotionally charged Cubs series. With their postseason run over, attention now shifts to what changes the Brewers might implement moving forward.
