UPDATE: Peru’s new president, Jose Jeri, is standing firm against mounting pressure to resign following deadly protests ignited by the tragic death of Eduardo Ruiz, a popular hip-hop singer. Protests erupted nationwide on July 13, 2023, resulting in Ruiz’s death during a mass demonstration in Lima, leaving one dead and hundreds clashing with police.

Authorities confirm that a state of emergency is set to be declared in the capital, Lima, as the public outrage grows. The protests, which began over calls for better pensions and wages for young people, have spiraled into a broader condemnation of crime and corruption in Peru, leading to the ouster of former President Dina Boluarte just last week.

The prosecutor’s office is actively investigating Ruiz’s death, which has become a rallying point for demonstrators. Police Chief General Oscar Arriola stated that Luis Magallanes, a police officer, is believed to have fired the fatal shot and has since been detained and dismissed from service. He is currently hospitalized after being assaulted by protesters.

In a response to the escalating situation, President Jeri emphasized his commitment to maintain stability, stating, “My responsibility is to maintain the stability of the country.” He expressed sorrow over Ruiz’s death on social media, vowing that the incident would be “objectively” investigated. Jeri condemned the violence, attributing it to “delinquents who infiltrated a peaceful demonstration to sow chaos.”

The protests have intensified frustrations across the nation, with thousands converging in the streets, particularly outside Congress in Lima. Activist Milagros Samillan shared her grief, saying, “He was peacefully hanging out with his friends. Unfortunately, the bullet hit his chest. We want justice for him.”

Reports indicate that during the protests on Wednesday, 89 police officers and 22 civilians were injured, and 11 individuals were detained. The prosecutor’s office announced the collection of evidence and has ordered the removal of Ruiz’s body from a local hospital as part of the investigation into serious human rights violations.

As tensions remain high, Peruvians are demanding accountability and justice. The political landscape is unstable, with Jeri being the seventh president in less than a decade. The world is watching as authorities work to address the unrest and respond to the public’s outcry for change.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as new details emerge from Lima.
