President Herzog Visits Zarzir After Iranian Missile Attack

A ballistic missile launched from Iran landed in central Israel on March 15, 2024, resulting in a fire and injuries. The incident prompted a visit from President Isaac Herzog to the village of Zarzir, where shrapnel fell. Herzog emphasized unity among different communities in the region during his visit, stating, “We are here in a Muslim village, which is a historic village, Zarzir. It is an incredible place here with Jews and Arabs from the entire region.”

The missile attack triggered sirens across central Israel, as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted the incoming missile. Shrapnel from the missile struck multiple areas, including the Tel Aviv region, although no casualties were reported. Emergency services, including Magen David Adom, dispatched teams to three key locations to manage the aftermath.

During his address, Herzog described the implications of the attack, saying, “From Lebanon and from Iran, they are trying to kill Muslims too. My message is, of course, that we are sisters and brothers together. We will not cave in.” He characterized the Iranian strategy as a significant miscalculation and reiterated Israel’s commitment to confronting threats from the north.

In addition to Herzog, local leaders joined the visit, including Atef Grifat, Head of the Local Council, and Munir Zubedat, Head of the Forum of Bedouin Councils in Northern Israel. The group acknowledged the collaborative spirit of the communities in the area, underscoring the notion of shared resilience.

The violence continued as Hezbollah launched further strikes from Lebanon on the same day, resulting in additional injuries. According to Magen David Adom, two individuals were lightly wounded: a 50-year-old woman sustained shrapnel injuries, while a 60-year-old man was injured by the shockwave of an explosion.

Earlier that morning, a separate barrage of Iranian missiles struck northern Israel, injuring approximately 58 people. The attack heavily damaged residential properties, with one missile impacting near four houses, leading to a significant fire. The Israel Fire and Rescue Authority reported that seven firefighting teams responded to the scene, working to control the flames that spread to nearby fields.

Magen David Adom confirmed that the injured parties were evacuated to local hospitals for treatment. One person suffered moderate wounds, while 57 others experienced minor injuries from glass shards due to the explosion.
