Texas A&M Bolsters Defensive Line with Key Transfers for 2026
Texas A&M University is enhancing its defensive line for the upcoming 2026 season by adding key players from the transfer portal. Former North Carolina defensive lineman CJ Sims and Illinois transfer Angelo McCullum are set to join senior DJ Hicks in filling the void left by veterans Albert Regis and Tyler Odyedim, both of whom declared for the 2026 NFL Draft.
The new recruits bring significant size and experience, which are expected to improve the team’s run defense this season. For DJ Hicks, this year is pivotal as he aims to step into a leadership role and maximize his potential as an interior pass rusher. With the support of Sims, McCullum, and senior defensive lineman T.J. Searcy, new defensive line coach Elijah Robinson has promising talent to work with this fall.
According to Mike Craven from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, both Aggie defensive linemen have made a mark in his recent Top 10 Texas-based defensive linemen rankings. CJ Sims earned the sixth spot, recognized for his versatility. During the 2025 season, he recorded 43 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Weighing in at 300 pounds, the transfer from North Carolina is expected to effectively replace Regis at the nose tackle position.
Sims emerged as a standout player for the Tar Heels, contributing significantly to a defense that improved under the guidance of coach Bil Belichick. His ability to disrupt plays and occupy blockers allows linebackers to make more impactful tackles. Notably, Sims’ tackle count in 2025 exceeded that of any other player in the rankings, indicating his capability beyond simply filling space on the field.
In the rankings, DJ Hicks was positioned at number ten. His performance consistency, particularly against the run, has been a focal point for improvement. Hicks, a former five-star recruit, played a more substantial role last season, starting only twice prior to 2025. His potential was evident during a game against Notre Dame, where he achieved a season-high two tackles for loss. He concluded the season with 26 tackles and a career-best three sacks, including four tackles during the Aggies’ first-round loss to Miami in the College Football Playoff.
As Hicks prepares for another offseason under strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt, expectations are high for his development. The combination of new talent and seasoned players in the defensive line sets the stage for an exciting season ahead for Texas A&M football.
