UPDATE: Vail Christian’s dynamic doubles team of Owen Rey and Cody Keyes has officially secured their spots in the Colorado 4A State Tournament, set to begin on October 17 at Pueblo City Park Tennis Courts. The duo finished as runners-up at the 4A Region 8 Tournament held on October 9-10 in Grand Junction, a remarkable achievement after the team graduated seven seniors.

“This is a tremendous honor for us,” Rey stated. “We’re excited about representing Vail at states and our match against Grand Junction really highlighted our potential.”

After a strong showing at regionals, Rey and Keyes, seeded third, showcased their skills by defeating Durango with a commanding score of 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. They then triumphed over the second-seeded Aspen team, winning 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in a thrilling semifinal match.

Keyes reflected on their journey, saying, “During regular season games, both matches with Aspen ended in tiebreakers with us losing 9-11. We turned that around at regionals.”

In the championship match, Rey and Keyes faced the top-seeded pair of Gareth Keller and Ben Miller, ultimately losing 6-3, 6-4, as Grand Junction clinched the regional team title.

The excitement continues for Vail Christian as they prepare for the state tournament, where Rey and Keyes will face D’Evelyn’s Dylan Reeb and Simon Czarnecki in their opening match.

Head coach J.D. Webster praised the athletes’ efforts: “We’re proud of our guys and thankful for the support from our tennis community. It’s truly a team effort.”

In addition to Rey and Keyes, Vail Christian had four fourth-place finishes at the regionals, including notable performances from Blake Kirkham in No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of Ehren Goree and Tennyson Sipes at No. 2, and Jake Martz and Tomas Alvarez at No. 3.

With the state tournament just around the corner, the Vail Christian tennis community is rallying behind Rey and Keyes, eager to see how they will perform against the best in Colorado.

Stay tuned as we continue to follow their journey to the state tournament!
