No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic began his campaign at the BNP Paribas Open with a hard-fought victory over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. The match took place on a windy Saturday in Indian Wells, California, marking Djokovic’s first outing since losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open final on February 1.

Djokovic struggled initially, dropping the first set and accumulating more unforced errors than winners, with 14 errors compared to 12 winners. However, he quickly regained his form, saving all three break points he faced in the second set while Majchrzak, conversely, committed 29 errors in the final two sets.

“Five weeks with no official match, I knew that the first match in such a long time would be a little bit tricky,” Djokovic stated post-match. “But I managed to reset after I lost that first set right away in the second and really never looked back.”

Alcaraz and Other Competitors Make Their Mark

In another match on the same day, top seed Carlos Alcaraz dispatched Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in just 67 minutes, securing a 6-2, 6-3 win. Alcaraz saved the only break point he faced while converting three out of four opportunities on Dimitrov’s serve, finishing the match with six aces.

Several seeded players faced early exits during the tournament. Sixteenth-seeded Karen Khachanov fell to 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, losing 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4. Khachanov and fellow Russian player Andrey Rublev, the 17th seed, faced travel challenges, as both arrived late to Indian Wells after being stranded in Dubai due to airspace closures following recent missile strikes in Iran.

Fonseca reflected on his match, saying, “(Today was) a great match against a great player. I’m very happy with the way that I fought.”

Mixed Results for American and Other Players

The day’s competition also saw upsets among other seeded players. No. 20 seed Luciano Darderi was defeated by Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, Argentina’s Sebastian Baez overcame Czech No. 22 seed Jiri Lehecka, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

Among the American contingent, No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz battled through for a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-1 victory against Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley. Eleventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev also secured a win, defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-2 after arriving late from Dubai.

Three seeded players engaged in thrilling three-set matches on Saturday. No. 10 Alexander Bublik triumphed over Czech lucky loser Vit Kopriva 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2; British 14th seed Jack Draper rallied to beat Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; and 19th-seeded Argentine Francisco Cerundolo edged out French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (5).

The day concluded with a mixture of outcomes for unseeded American players. Alex Michelson claimed victory over 32nd-seeded Ugo Humbert 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), while Aleksander Kovacevic defeated No. 31 Corentin Moutet of France 6-1, 6-4. Conversely, Sebastian Korda lost after taking the first set against sixth-seeded Alex de Minaur, with a final score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Qualifier Mackenzie McDonald also fell in straight sets to No. 27 Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3.

As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen how the seeded players will fare in the coming rounds, with Djokovic and Alcaraz among those expected to make deep runs in this prestigious event.
