FDA Expands Urgent Cinnamon Recall to 16 Brands Due to Lead

URGENT UPDATE: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just expanded a critical recall of ground cinnamon products after discovering elevated lead levels. This alarming development affects 16 brands, including HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife, prompting immediate consumer action.
The FDA’s latest notice warns that these brands “may be unsafe” for consumption due to potential health risks linked to lead exposure. The elevated lead levels were detected during state product testing and subsequently verified by the FDA. An ongoing investigation is underway to assess additional brands that may be affected.
According to the FDA, “The FDA is continuing to analyze cinnamon and review sample results received from state partners who have been continuously sampling ground cinnamon at retail for elevated levels of lead.” The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as lead exposure can lead to serious health issues, especially in children.
The brands included in the current recall are as follows:
– HAETAE
– Roshni
– Wise Wife
– La Frontera
– Durra (sold in California and Michigan)
– El Chilar (available at El Torito Market)
– Marcum (sold at Save-A-Lot Food Stores)
– SWAD (available at Patel Brothers)
– Supreme Tradition (sold at Dollar Tree)
– Compania Indillor Orientale (sold at Eurogrocery)
– ALB Flavor (available at Eurogrocery)
– Shahzada (sold at Premium Supermarket)
– Spice Class (available at Fish World)
– Jiva Organics (sold at Taj Supermarket in California)
– Super Brand (sold at Asian Supermarket in Little Rock, Ark.)
– Asli (available at A&Y Global Market in Columbia, Mo.)
Consumers are urged to refrain from purchasing these products immediately. Those who have already bought the recalled cinnamon are instructed to dispose of it safely, as consuming the contaminated spice could lead to significant health risks.
While the FDA has recommended all implicated brands to initiate voluntary recalls, they have not yet established contact with Haitai Inc., the producer of HAETAE-brand cinnamon. As of September, the FDA reports that no illnesses or adverse events associated with the recalled products have been documented.
This developing situation highlights the importance of consumer vigilance and the need for swift action in response to food safety issues. Stay tuned for further updates as the FDA continues its investigation and monitoring of ground cinnamon products.
