Mueller and Haugsjaa Claim Historic Lead in Olympic Luge
American athletes Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa have made history by taking the lead in the men’s doubles luge competition at the Milan Cortina Games. This marks a significant achievement for USA Luge, as they become the first American sled to lead an Olympic race heading into the final heat.
The duo completed their first run on February 7, 2026, with a time of 52.482 seconds, edging out Austria’s Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl, who finished just behind them at 52.485 seconds. The margin is incredibly slim, underscoring the competitive nature of the event.
Mueller and Haugsjaa, both Olympic rookies, have demonstrated their potential throughout the season. Earlier, they secured victory at a World Cup race and were crowned world junior doubles champions in 2024. Their performance at the Olympic stage showcases their rapid ascent in the sport and positions them as strong contenders for a medal.
The second heat of the competition will take place later today, where the pressure will intensify as they aim to maintain their lead.
This moment not only highlights the athletes’ individual talent but also reflects the growing strength of the USA Luge program on the international stage. As they prepare for their next run, the eyes of Olympic fans will be on Cortina d’Ampezzo, waiting to see if Mueller and Haugsjaa can secure their place in history.
The excitement surrounding this event is palpable, with expectations high for the young American team. As the competition unfolds, the sports community will be keenly observing the outcome of this thrilling contest.
