Local Performer Brings History to Life at Columbus Library
Karen McDowell, a local thespian, will present a captivating living history performance at the Columbus Library on February 26, 2024, at 14:00. This event will feature a biographical monologue and reenactment of a significant African American historical figure, whose identity will be disclosed during the performance.
McDowell, who holds a degree in theatre arts from Limestone College, has a rich background in the performing arts. After dedicating over 32 years to her role as a library assistant at Landrum Library, she has become well-known for her engaging character reenactments. These performances explore the lives, history, and accomplishments of influential African Americans through original biographical stories.
The upcoming performance is part of McDowell’s ongoing commitment to educate and entertain audiences. Last year, she portrayed Harriet Tubman at the Columbus Library, receiving positive feedback from attendees and sparking interest in African American history.
Enriching Community Engagement
The Polk County Public Libraries system, which includes both the Columbus and Saluda Libraries, plays an essential role in the community by providing access to a wide range of resources. This includes books, movies, music, audiobooks, and downloadable eBooks. In addition, the libraries offer public computers and wireless internet access to support patrons of all ages.
The library system also hosts a variety of virtual and in-person programs designed to engage the community. These events aim to promote literacy, cultural awareness, and lifelong learning, making it a vital resource for residents.
