IRS Confirms Tax Season Opens January 26: Key Changes Ahead
UPDATE: The IRS has just announced that federal income tax filing will officially open on January 26, 2026. Taxpayers should prepare now to maximize their refunds, as the upcoming season promises significant changes that could increase average refunds by an astounding $1,000 this year.
Tax refunds are crucial for many households, often representing the largest annual payment they receive. Last year’s average refund reached nearly $3,200, and this year, financial analysis from Piper Sandler predicts the typical refund could surge to approximately $4,200 due to new tax breaks enacted by recent legislation.
These changes include substantial modifications from the Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill,” which retroactively applies several tax breaks beginning in 2025. Notable adjustments involve abolishing taxes on certain overtime and tipped income, alongside raising the cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction from $10,000 to $40,000.
As taxpayers gear up for this critical financial season, it’s essential to remember that federal income tax returns are due on April 15, 2026. For those needing additional time, an automatic tax extension can be requested, extending the deadline to October 15, 2026. However, any owed taxes must still be settled by the original deadline to avoid penalties.
A pressing concern for many is the timeline for receiving refunds. The IRS states that e-filers typically see their refunds processed in under 21 days. If you file your Form 1040 on the opening day, you could potentially receive your refund by February 16, 2026, provided there are no issues.
To stay updated on the status of your refund, utilize the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund” tool. This resource will provide information within 24 hours for electronic submissions. For paper returns, however, the IRS has indicated that it may take up to four weeks for status updates, as these forms require more manual processing.
Tax season is fast approaching! Stay informed and ready to act, as these changes could significantly impact your financial situation this year. Share this information widely to help others prepare for a potentially lucrative tax refund season.
