Caleb Downs Declares for NFL Draft, Eyes Top-10 Selection

Ohio State University standout safety Caleb Downs has officially declared for the upcoming NFL Draft. The two-time AP first-team All-American made the announcement on March 6, 2024, during an episode of the “Downs 2 Business” podcast alongside his brother, Josh Downs, a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts.

In his announcement, Downs reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, “Someone told me the other day it’s Champagne problems: Either way, it’s a celebration to go back to school and be with my teammates or get a chance to go to the dream I had since I was a kid. But I think it’s time to go to the NFL.” His decision marks a pivotal moment in his athletic career as he prepares to transition to professional football.

Impressive College Career

Throughout the 2023 season, Downs established himself as one of the premier defensive players in college football. He earned the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back and the Lott IMPACT Trophy for being college football’s best safety. Additionally, Downs was honored as the Big Ten Conference’s Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year and the Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year.

Downs finished the season with a total of 68 tackles, ranking third on the Buckeyes, along with two interceptions. His outstanding performance also earned him a ninth-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting, highlighting his impact on the field. Unfortunately, Ohio State’s aspirations for back-to-back national championships came to an end when they lost to Miami in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals at the Cotton Bowl.
