Saks OFF 5TH Store Closures Confirmed Amid Bankruptcy Rumors
UPDATE: Saks OFF 5TH is set to close multiple store locations, including one in Chicago, Illinois, as bankruptcy rumors swirl around its parent company, Saks Global. The Chicago store is expected to shut down in June 2026, following a social media post from a local who claims to have spoken with an associate about the closure.
As the financial troubles deepen, another Saks OFF 5TH location in East Hanover, New Jersey, will cease operations on January 17, 2026. This decision aligns with the company’s strategy to focus on higher-performing stores. A spokesperson stated, “This will enable us to place greater attention to our high-performing and high-potential store locations.”
In total, Saks plans to close nine stores in 2026, impacting locations across New York, Texas, Washington D.C., Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. These closures come as Saks Global faces mounting financial difficulties, including missing a crucial $100 million interest payment due on December 30. Sources indicate that the company is in talks for a $1 billion loan to stabilize operations.
The urgency surrounding Saks is amplified by its recent leadership changes. CEO Marc Metrick announced his departure, with Richard Baker stepping in as CEO to guide the company through this turbulent period. Baker is tasked with advancing Saks Global’s transformation while maintaining a focus on luxury retail.
Amidst the chaos, Saks has been exploring options to restructure its substantial $2.2 billion debt, which was accrued following its acquisition of Neiman Marcus Group in 2024. Complications arose when reports surfaced suggesting the retailer was facing bankruptcy due to late payments, prompting the company to reassure stakeholders that restructuring was “not being contemplated.”
Despite previous claims of stability, the situation appears increasingly precarious. Saks previously asserted that it had “sufficient liquidity” after raising $600 million in funding from bondholders. However, the recent developments raise questions about its financial viability.
As the situation unfolds, customers and employees are left wondering what this means for the future of Saks OFF 5TH and its commitment to delivering quality products and service. The company’s next steps will be closely monitored as it attempts to navigate these turbulent waters and reshape its operational strategy.
Stay tuned for further updates as Saks Global’s financial situation continues to develop.
