Sweden Claims First IIHF World Junior Championship Gold Since 2012
Sweden secured its first gold medal in the IIHF World Junior Championship since 2012 by defeating Czechia 4-2 in St. Paul on March 25, 2024. This victory marks a significant milestone for the Swedish team, which had faced a long drought with four silver medals and two bronze finishes in the preceding years. The win not only highlights Sweden’s resilience but also celebrates their third championship title in the tournament’s 50-year history.
The decisive moment came when Ivar Stenberg scored an empty-net goal with just eight seconds remaining, sealing the victory for Sweden. Forward Victor Eklund, who was on a FaceTime call with his brother during the celebration, expressed the joy of winning, stating, “It means everything… for all the kids at home, I’m just so happy for them.”
Sweden’s journey to the gold medal included several thrilling moments, including a dramatic eight-round shootout against Finland in the semifinals. The final game at the Grand Casino Arena began with Sweden establishing a commanding 3-0 lead after an impressive performance in the first two periods.
Czechia’s late-game strategy shifted when they pulled goaltender Michal Orsulak for an extra attacker with 3:20 left on the clock. This decision paid off momentarily as Adam Jirick scored 56 seconds later, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The tension escalated when Matej Kubiesa found the net with only 23.2 seconds left, making the score 3-2.
Despite the late surge from Czechia, Sweden remained composed. Defenseman Sascha Boumedienne noted, “We all knew we were going to end up on top… We just had that feeling together.” Goaltender Love Harenstam added, “We played great hockey throughout the whole tournament. Today, we showed we were the best team.”
Sweden’s scoring began with Casper Juustovaara, who netted the first goal after a shorthanded rush. Eklund then capitalized on a power play to double the lead, marking Sweden’s tenth power-play goal of the tournament. Boumedienne extended the lead to 3-0 early in the third period, showcasing the team’s offensive prowess.
Harenstam’s performance was pivotal, as he stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced, earning the Directorate Award for the tournament’s top goaltender. This achievement makes him the first Swedish goaltender to win the award since 2023. Reflecting on the victory, Harenstam recalled the 2012 gold medal game, where he watched in awe as Sweden triumphed over Russia in overtime. He remarked, “I’m just so happy… I couldn’t do it without my teammates.”
In addition to Harenstam’s accolades, Anton Frondell was named the tournament’s best forward, making him the first Swedish player to receive the honor since Filip Forsberg in 2014. Czech defenseman David Jiricek received the award for best defenseman, while Vojtech Cihar was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
The Swedish team’s triumph comes after a disappointing fourth-place finish in the previous year’s tournament, where they lost to Czechia in the bronze medal game. Eklund expressed his confidence going into this championship match, stating, “I was just so sure we were going to win… We came into the game with the mentality that this is not over yet.”
Young player Viggo Bjorck, who is among the top prospects for the 2026 draft, encapsulated the emotional high of the moment, stating, “It’s an amazing feeling. I hope it inspires a lot of young people to start (playing) hockey.”
With this victory, Sweden not only adds another gold medal to its storied history but also reinforces its position as a powerhouse in junior ice hockey. The championship win serves as a proud moment for the nation, promising to inspire future generations of players.
