Fresno Police Launch Urgent DUI Crackdown This Weekend

URGENT UPDATE: Fresno Police are ramping up efforts to combat drunk driving this weekend, deploying 11 extra officers specifically focused on catching impaired drivers. The operation kicks off at 6 P.M. on Saturday, December 16, 2023, and will continue until 4 A.M. on Sunday, targeting areas throughout the city as many celebrate the holiday season.

“The biggest thing is, don’t risk it,” warned Sgt. Todd Turney, emphasizing the department’s commitment to public safety during this critical time. Officers will be on the lookout for common traffic violations indicative of DUI, such as weaving and speeding.

This crackdown comes in the wake of a tragic incident earlier this week, where Carlos and Maria Pimentel were killed by a suspected drunk driver, Shawn Borecha, who is now charged with two counts of murder. Authorities report that Borecha was attempting to pass two vehicles while intoxicated when he crashed head-on into the couple’s car. This shocking event highlights the devastating consequences of impaired driving.

“When you impair your ability to operate the vehicle, bad things happen, such as a collision,” Sgt. Turney stated, stressing the broader impact on the community.

Fresno County has faced a surge in DUI incidents, with prosecutors ending 2025 with over 5,500 DUI cases, including 423 felonies that resulted in significant injuries and 8 murder charges. Tragically, these preventable accidents have led to the deaths of 15 victims this year alone.
