Patriots’ Drake Maye Stands by Teammates Amid Assault Allegations
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye expressed his unwavering support for teammates Stefon Diggs and Christian Barmore following serious assault allegations against both players. During a press conference on December 31, 2023, Maye emphasized his commitment to stand by them amid the legal challenges they face, stating, “I’m going to support them any way I can. I love those guys.”
The allegations have cast a shadow over the Patriots, who currently hold a strong record of 13-3 and are poised for a playoff run. Diggs faces charges including felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault in connection with an incident involving his personal chef earlier in December. Barmore, on the other hand, is charged with assault and battery on a family or household member, stemming from claims made by a woman he reportedly was in a relationship with.
As the Patriots prepare for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, Maye reflected on the character of his teammates. “Stef means a lot to this team,” he noted, highlighting Diggs’ enthusiasm during practices and his ability to motivate younger players. Maye described Barmore as passionate about football and a dedicated teammate, further reinforcing the camaraderie within the team.
The comments from Maye come at a time when Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is facing scrutiny for his handling of the situation. In response to the allegations, Vrabel stated, “These are allegations. It’s things that we have to handle, and every day there’s distractions, some are smaller than others.” He expressed confidence that the team would remain focused on their game plan despite the ongoing legal issues.
Vrabel added that the Patriots have taken the allegations seriously, but he emphasized the importance of allowing the legal process to unfold without jumping to conclusions. “We’ve made a statement. We’ve taken the allegations very seriously,” he said, indicating that further discussions would follow as more information becomes available.
Attorney David Meier, representing both Diggs and Barmore, has publicly denied the allegations, calling them “unsubstantiated” and “uncorroborated.” Meier asserted that the claims have arisen from a “financial dispute” between Diggs and his former employee, which he believes will be resolved in court. He expressed confidence that evidence would clear both players of any wrongdoing.
As the legal proceedings develop, the Patriots remain focused on their pursuit of a Super Bowl appearance, aiming to make a significant impact in the playoffs. The team’s performance on the field will be closely watched as they navigate the challenges presented by these allegations, while Maye’s support for his teammates underscores the unity within the locker room as they face uncertain times.
