U.S. Calls for Restraint as China Conducts Military Drills Near Taiwan
Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated following military drills conducted by China, which the U.S. State Department described as “unnecessarily” heightening regional tensions. The drills, which included missile launches and the mobilization of military aircraft and naval vessels, have prompted calls for restraint from Washington.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Tommy Pigott, principal deputy spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, urged Beijing to “cease its military pressure” against Taiwan. Pigott emphasized that China’s military activities and rhetoric toward Taiwan contribute to rising tensions in the area. He remarked, “We urge Beijing to exercise restraint, cease its military pressure against Taiwan, and instead engage in meaningful dialogue.”
The recent military maneuvers, dubbed “Justice Mission 2025,” involved the encirclement of Taiwan’s main island, with China asserting that the exercises simulated a blockade of key Taiwanese ports. The drills took place on March 4 and 5, 2024, and were condemned by Taiwanese officials as “highly provocative.”
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve reunification. The ongoing military activities come in the wake of the Trump administration approving an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, reflecting a continued U.S. commitment to support the island’s self-defense.
Despite the rising military posturing from Beijing, former President Donald Trump expressed a lack of concern about the drills, stating, “I have a great relationship with President Xi. And he hasn’t told me anything about it.” When pressed about the possibility of an invasion, Trump responded, “I don’t believe he’s going to be doing it,” referencing the longstanding naval exercises in the region.
The U.S. has maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding its potential military response to any aggression against Taiwan. This approach has been a cornerstone of U.S.-Taiwan relations for decades, aimed at deterring Chinese aggression while avoiding direct confrontation.
The latest military exercises represent the sixth significant round of drills conducted by China since 2022, following a controversial visit to Taiwan by then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which had previously incited a strong reaction from Beijing.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community watches closely, aware that any miscalculation could have far-reaching consequences for peace and stability in the region. The U.S. remains committed to advocating for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
