San Francisco International Airport Launches $180 Million Runway Upgrade

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is set to undertake a significant renovation project on Runway 1R/19L, which will involve a complete repavement along with upgrades to lighting systems and taxiways. The project, estimated to cost $180 million, is scheduled to begin on March 30, 2026, and is expected to last approximately six months, concluding by October 2, 2026.

This closure will take place during the summer travel season, a period recognized as one of the busiest for air traffic. Although SFO has recently completed similar runway improvements, including refurbishments in 2023 and 2024, the impact of closing one of its four runways will inevitably affect airport operations. The airport anticipates that less than 10% of flights may experience delays, primarily during peak travel times.

Details of the Renovation Project

The renovation of Runway 1R/19L will include repaving the surface layer, enhancing the taxiway system connected to the runway, upgrading the runway’s lighting, and repainting its markings. Runway 1R is crucial for narrowbody aircraft, typically used for departures alongside Runway 1L. The closure means that during this period, all narrowbody departures will shift to Runway 1L or the longer Runways 28L/28R, potentially resulting in longer queues for takeoff.

While the airport has managed operations with three active runways in the past, the closure may lead to increased noise levels for nearby communities and could affect arrival patterns, particularly during adverse weather conditions that require different landing configurations.

Investment in Infrastructure and Future Plans

Funding for the renovation project will come partially from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This refurbishment of Runway 1R/19L marks the third major improvement at SFO in just four years, following the upgrades to Runway 1L/19R in 2023 and Runway 10R/28L in 2024. The continuous investment in airport infrastructure aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
