Ohio State’s Caleb Downs Wins Jim Thorpe Award for Excellence
Ohio State’s safety, Caleb Downs, has been awarded the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing him as the top defensive back in college football for the 2024 season. This accolade comes even as the Buckeyes faced disappointment last week with a loss to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship game. Downs triumphed over notable competitors, including Mansoor Delane from LSU and Leonard Moore from Notre Dame, showcasing his exceptional skills on the field.
Throughout the season, Downs accumulated impressive statistics, including 60 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, and two interceptions across 13 games. His achievement marks a significant milestone for Ohio State, as he is the first Buckeye defensive back to earn the award since Malcolm Jenkins in 2008. Notably, Antoine Winfield Sr. was the inaugural Buckeye to receive the Jim Thorpe Award in 1998, making Downs the third recipient in the program’s history.
From Alabama to Ohio State
Downs began his collegiate career at Alabama, where he made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2023. His ability to secure a starting position right away set him apart, especially considering the challenges faced by true freshmen under the former head coach, Nick Saban, renowned for his defensive strategies. Following Saban’s retirement, Downs transferred to Ohio State in early 2024. His contributions were pivotal in leading the Buckeyes to the national championship victory last season.
As the Buckeyes prepare for the 2024 College Football Playoffs, where they hold the No. 2 seed, Downs is expected to play a crucial role. They are set to face the winner of the matchup between Miami and Texas A&M. To secure their path back to championship glory, Downs will need to perform at his best against teams with potent offensive capabilities.
Looking Ahead to the NFL Draft
With the 2026 NFL Draft approaching, Downs is anticipated to declare for the draft following the playoff season. His performance during the playoffs could impact his draft position significantly, as many NFL teams are keen to acquire his talents. While some analysts suggest that the safety position may not carry the same weight as others in the draft, Downs’ skills and accomplishments have made him a highly sought-after prospect.
As he approaches the final games of his collegiate career, Caleb Downs aims to solidify his legacy at Ohio State while preparing for the next chapter in professional football. With the spotlight on him, fans and scouts alike will be watching closely as he seeks to lead the Buckeyes to victory once more.
