Safe Space Winter Shelter Launches Urgent Winter Program in Chico

UPDATE: The Safe Space Winter Shelter in Chico is gearing up for a critical winter season, launching its annual shelter program on December 21. This year, the nonprofit has expanded its morning hours and introduced a new drop-in center, responding to the urgent needs of the community.

From December 21 to March 1, the winter shelter will operate at five partner churches: Chico First Baptist Church, Hope Commons Church, Faith Lutheran Church of Chico, Chico Trinity United Methodist Church, and First Christian Chico. Guests can arrive at the nonprofit’s office located at 1909 The Esplanade between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., where a shuttle will transport them to their overnight accommodations.

The Shelter Operation Coordinator, Chrissi Overlock, emphasized the importance of the extended hours this year, stating that guests will have a warm place to stay from 5:30 p.m. to noon the following day. “This will hopefully make people’s mornings easier and keep them warmer,” she said.

After a night at the shelter, guests can access the Radical Resilience program from 8 a.m. to noon at the nonprofit’s office. This program provides snacks, device charging, restrooms, and essential one-on-one case management. The new office space also offers a daytime refuge where individuals can stay out of the cold, with amenities including hot meals, hygiene products, and a welcoming environment.

In August, Safe Space Winter Shelter initiated its Radical Resilience program, allowing individuals to drop in during the day. Overlock explained that this hub enables case managers to connect with clients who are often forced to move by authorities. “People living on the street move out of survival,” Overlock noted, highlighting the need for stability and support.

The nonprofit’s new office, which opened in October 2024, has significantly improved facilities for both guests and staff. Overlock stated, “It’s a place where guests can come; they’re not being told they have to go.” This approach fosters a supportive atmosphere, allowing case managers to better assist their clients.

Safe Space Winter Shelter’s winter program is primarily powered by volunteers, who are considered the “heart of the organization.” The shelter imposes no sobriety requirements, allowing couples to stay together, and welcomes pets in limited numbers.
