Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded sharply to comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested that Petro would face consequences in the ongoing battle against drug cartels. During a press briefing on September 27, 2023, Trump claimed that Colombia is “producing a lot of drugs” and warned Petro to “wise up or he’ll be next.”

Petro characterized Trump’s remarks as stemming from a lack of understanding regarding Colombia’s situation. In a statement shared on social media platform X, he expressed disappointment that the U.S. President relies on what he termed as misinformation. “Trump is a very misinformed man when it comes to Colombia,” Petro stated, emphasizing that the country possesses significant expertise on cocaine trafficking. He criticized the sources of information that reach Trump, asserting that they mislead him entirely.

The Colombian leader also expressed concern over the implications of Trump’s statements for Colombian sovereignty. “This terrible misinformation reaching the President of the United States leads him to make statements and take actions that cannot be directed at a president democratically elected by the majority of Colombian society,” Petro said. He pointed out that such comments disrespect Colombia and its electoral process.

In addition to addressing Trump’s remarks, Petro rejected the U.S. administration’s military strategies in the Caribbean, including strikes on drug trafficking vessels. He argued that targeting small boat operators does not effectively combat narco-terrorism, as these individuals often come from impoverished backgrounds. “Firing missiles at boat operators is fighting against narco-terrorists, when those boat operators are poor people,” he explained. Petro highlighted that the real masterminds behind drug trafficking reside in luxury locations such as Dubai and Madrid, far removed from the struggles faced by impoverished communities in Colombia.

Petro further emphasized that the primary security challenge facing the Americas extends beyond drug trafficking, citing the climate crisis as a pressing issue. He called for a broader understanding and a more nuanced approach to tackling the complexities of drug-related violence and environmental challenges.

As diplomatic tensions escalate between the U.S. and Latin American countries, Petro’s statements reflect a growing frustration with external pressures and mischaracterizations of Colombia’s efforts to combat drug trafficking. The ongoing dialogue between the two nations will likely shape future policies and international relations in the region.
