Schools Close Early as Snowstorm Hits Hampton Roads Monday

UPDATE: A significant snowstorm is forecasted to impact Hampton Roads on Monday, December 8, 2023, prompting school districts across the region to take immediate action. The National Weather Service predicts approximately 1 to 2 inches of snow, with a potential worst-case scenario of up to 4 inches in certain areas. Snow is expected to begin between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., leading to early school dismissals and closures.

Hampton Public Schools announced a two-hour early closure for all students and staff, with all after-school programs, including PM preschool and Head Start classes, canceled. Night shift custodians will not report for duty, and all sports events are also canceled.

In Isle of Wight County, public schools will remain closed for the day. Isle of Wight Academy will transition to a virtual learning day, and all preschool, before, and after-care services are suspended, along with sports and after-school activities.

Newport News Public Schools are implementing a half-day dismissal, canceling all after-school events and activities. New Kent County Public Schools also confirmed a closure for Monday.

Meanwhile, Poquoson Public Schools will operate on a half-day schedule, with all afternoon and evening activities canceled.

As the storm approaches, residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and road safety. With schools closing early, parents are urged to make arrangements for their children as the first flakes begin to fall.
