UConn Retires Sue Bird’s Iconic No. 10 in Emotional Ceremony
URGENT UPDATE: The University of Connecticut (UConn) has officially retired Sue Bird’s iconic No. 10 jersey during a heartfelt ceremony at Gampel Pavilion on October 15, 2023. This momentous occasion coincided with UConn’s dominant victory over DePaul, winning 102-35.
Bird, a UConn alumna and one of the most celebrated athletes in women’s basketball history, addressed the crowd, stating, “So now it belongs to all of us.” The retirement of her number signifies not just her individual legacy but also the collective progress of women’s sports in the United States.
The journey of No. 10 began long before Bird’s illustrious career. Inspired by her sister, Jen Bird, who wore the same number, Sue adopted No. 10 as a symbol of her identity. Over her career, she faced challenges in securing the number due to its popularity among fellow players, including Olympic teammate Tamika Catchings.
UConn’s head coach, Geno Auriemma, highlighted the significance of the number, remarking, “You do get the feeling there is something special there.” He noted that UConn only retires jerseys for Naismith Hall of Famers, indicating the high bar Bird has set.
Bird’s influence extends beyond UConn, as she has inspired countless young athletes. Her number is now enshrined alongside legends in sports history, much like other iconic athletes such as Michael Jordan with No. 23 and Larry Bird with No. 33.
The jersey retirement ceremony included a display of Bird memorabilia, showcasing her incredible impact on the sport. Attendees felt the emotional weight of the moment, as Bird reflected on her legacy, stating, “It’s really special. The further you get away from a career, the more you can really sit in it and realize how special it is.”
Fans and teammates celebrated Bird’s historic contributions, with former UConn star Rebecca Lobo sharing a heartfelt video message, emphasizing how everyone aspired to wear No. 10 because of Bird’s legacy.
As UConn moves forward, the number 10 will remain untouched, a permanent tribute to Bird’s contributions to the game and the pathways she has paved for future generations. The atmosphere at Gampel Pavilion was electric, filled with pride and admiration for a player who has changed the landscape of women’s basketball forever.
Bird’s number will now be a symbol of excellence for aspiring athletes everywhere, reinforcing the importance of legacy in sports.
For UConn and its community, the retirement of No. 10 marks not just the end of a jersey’s journey but the celebration of a phenomenal career that continues to inspire. As Bird concluded, “Can I just enjoy today?” The answer is a resounding yes—as the crowd celebrated a legacy that will last for generations.
