USC Tops Early-Signing Period; Oregon and BYU Celebrate Success
UPDATE: The early-signing period for college football recruiting wrapped up on December 5, 2023, revealing significant wins and losses for Western programs. USC emerged as the clear leader, securing the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation amidst a chaotic coaching landscape.
As the dust settled, the Trojans celebrated a stellar class, highlighted by key recruits like five-star tight end Mark Bowman and five-star tackle Keenyi Pepe. Coach Lincoln Riley‘s efforts paid off immensely, ensuring USC retained its top position throughout the recruiting cycle.
Meanwhile, Oregon also celebrated a strong finish, landing the No. 3 class nationally despite losing two coordinators just before signing day. The Ducks secured five-star recruits, including receiver Jalen Lott, who held off on his letter of intent until the last moment. Oregon’s impressive haul keeps them competitive in the Big Ten as they prepare for the upcoming season.
In Provo, BYU experienced a thrilling week, with Coach Kalani Sitake rejecting an offer from Penn State to remain with the Cougars. Notably, BYU flipped two four-star recruits from in-state rivals Utah, reinforcing their recruiting prowess. The signing of California’s top quarterback Ryder Lyons, who had been rumored not to sign due to an impending mission, further bolstered their class.
Conversely, Colorado struggled this signing period, finishing at No. 95 nationally. Despite signing 11 players, only two were four-star recruits, including linebacker Carson Crawford. The Buffaloes’ decision to focus less on high school prospects left them in a challenging position, but the hiring of aggressive recruiter Brennan Marion offers a glimmer of hope for future classes.
Both California and Utah faced mixed outcomes. The Bears lost key commitments, such as edge rusher Cameron Brooks to Florida State, but managed to retain local talent Nemyah Telona. The hiring of Tosh Lupoi is expected to enhance their recruiting efforts moving forward. In contrast, Utah lost the Pula twins to BYU, a significant blow, but successfully flipped cornerback Salesi Moa from Tennessee, showcasing their resilience.
Despite Stanford’s coaching changes, the Cardinal secured critical flips late in the process, including four-star receiver Zion Robinson, indicating a strong finish after a rocky start.
In summary, the early-signing period has left some programs celebrating monumental victories while others are left to reassess their strategies. As recruiting continues to evolve, the implications of these signings will shape the future of college football on the West Coast.
Stay tuned for further updates as these teams prepare for the upcoming season and continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of college football recruiting.
