Oakland Mourns Coach John Beam in Emotional Memorial Service
UPDATE: Oakland is reeling as the community comes together to honor the legacy of Coach John Beam, who was tragically shot last month. An emotional memorial service held at Everett and Jones Barbecue on Friday drew hundreds who celebrated the profound impact Beam made on countless lives.
The gathering was a testament to Beam’s legacy, with former athletes sharing heartfelt stories of his mentorship. Among them, Damon Owens, a 1991 Skyline High School alum, expressed gratitude, saying, “I’m thankful for what your husband has done for my life story.” The packed venue, filled with red Skyline jackets, was a reflection of the community bonds Beam fostered through sports.
Beam, who served as a legendary coach at Skyline High School and later at Laney College, is remembered not only for his athletic achievements but for shaping young lives. His death has sent shockwaves through Oakland’s sports community, making headlines across the nation since his untimely passing in November 2025.
Former NFL running back Deon Strother, one of many who spoke at the memorial, recalled a pivotal moment during a homecoming game. Despite fumbling the ball four times, Beam continued to believe in him, providing the validation Strother needed. “He showed that he really loved me and he believed in me,” Strother reflected.
The emotional tributes continued as speakers highlighted how Beam’s encouragement transcended the realm of sports, impacting both male and female athletes alike. Shalon Cortez, who faced challenges with autism, shared how Beam’s belief in her capabilities allowed her to pursue diverse interests, stating, “That type of person in your life is the reason why a lot of us have that grit we need to get past obstacles.”
Skyline High School has announced plans to rename the football field in Beam’s honor, a change expected to be official by next season. This recognition reflects his more than four decades of dedication to building a powerhouse program in Oakland.
As the memorial unfolded, a portrait of Beam, with his signature mustache and wise gaze, served as a poignant reminder of his lasting influence. Attendees reminisced about their experiences, united by the coach’s unwavering support.
The atmosphere was bittersweet as mourners shared stories of camaraderie and care, epitomizing the spirit of Oakland. “He touched lives all over the place,” said Jamaal Kizziee, who took over as Skyline’s football coach after Beam’s departure. “We all got brought together through that sense of care. That’s Oakland.”
As the community continues to grieve, the legacy of Coach John Beam remains alive in the hearts of those he inspired. The outpouring of love at this memorial serves as a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on an entire community.
