Cast of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Sparks Excitement for Season 2
The cast of HBO’s upcoming prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, generated excitement at the CCXP convention in São Paulo on December 7, 2023, as they shared insights about the show and teased details about its second season. The event featured a live brass band performing the iconic theme music from the original Game of Thrones series, setting a vibrant atmosphere for the panel discussion.
Key cast members, including Peter Claffey, who portrays Ser Duncan the Tall, and Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Dunk’s squire, Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg, participated in the panel. They revealed that the first season of the six-episode series is set to premiere on January 18, 2024, and noted that the show has already been renewed for a second season.
When asked about Dunk’s character, Claffey described him as “an anxious, nervous but very lovable guy” who strives to do what’s right in the challenging landscape of Westeros. He elaborated on Dunk’s relationship with Egg, stating, “It’s quite a symbiotic relationship,” highlighting how Egg’s intelligence aids Dunk in navigating the complexities of their world. Claffey noted, “Dunk has a very black-and-white idea of how to do things,” which contrasts with Egg’s more nuanced understanding of interpersonal dynamics.
The panel also acknowledged the connection between Dunk and Brienne of Tarth, a character from the original series portrayed by Gwendoline Christie. Claffey expressed admiration for Christie’s performance, emphasizing shared traits between her character and Dunk. “I loved Gwendoline Christie as Brienne,” he remarked.
Celebrating the adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s work, Claffey mentioned a dinner with the author in New York, where Martin humorously urged the show’s creators not to “mess it up.” The panel included a special video message from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known for his role as Jaime Lannister. In the message, Coster-Waldau humorously offered advice to the new cast members: “Try to keep all of your limbs intact.”
Ansell shared his experience of adjusting to the role, specifically the decision to shave his head for the character of Egg. He initially found the transition challenging but soon embraced it, stating, “Showers are a lot quicker.” The young actor expressed his enjoyment of spending time with Claffey outside of filming, often bonding over meals and arcade games.
As the panel concluded, Claffey revealed that filming for the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to begin shortly. “On Tuesday, we start filming season two!” he announced to an enthusiastic audience. While details about the upcoming season remain under wraps, Claffey hinted at needing “spray tans” and acknowledged having seen the first script.
The prequel series adapts Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, taking place 90 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. Co-star Finn Bennett, who plays Egg’s older brother, Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, previously shared his doubts about his audition, believing he had performed poorly. He later learned from the casting team that his audition had gone well, a relief that reinforced his excitement for the project.
As anticipation builds for the premiere, the cast’s camaraderie and enthusiasm promise to engage audiences as they return to the world of Westeros.
