Norwegian Study Explores Surgical vs. Nonsurgical Treatments for Cervical Radiculopathy
A significant presentation titled “Surgical or Nonsurgical? Results from a Norwegian RCT on Cervical Radiculopathy” will take place on December 22, 2025, at Weill Cornell Medicine. Dr. Jon Håvard Sommernes will lead the discussion, focusing on a randomized controlled trial conducted in Norway that compares surgical intervention with physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) in patients suffering from disc herniation and spondylosis.
Dr. Sommernes will present findings that could influence treatment approaches for patients experiencing cervical radiculopathy, a condition characterized by pain radiating from the neck into the arms, often caused by nerve root compression. The study aims to provide clarity on the effectiveness and outcomes of surgical versus nonsurgical options, addressing a prevalent issue in neurosurgery and rehabilitation.
The event is scheduled to begin at 7:45 AM and will conclude at 8:30 AM. It is designed for healthcare professionals and students interested in the latest advancements in neurological surgery and related fields. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Dr. Sommernes during a question-and-answer session following the presentation.
This research is particularly relevant given the rising number of patients affected by cervical radiculopathy worldwide. The trial’s results promise to offer valuable insights into optimizing treatment strategies, potentially impacting clinical practices across various healthcare systems.
The findings will be of interest to practitioners in neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and pain management, as they navigate the complex decisions surrounding patient care. By comparing the efficacy of surgical approaches with nonsurgical methods, the study seeks to enhance understanding of patient outcomes and improve quality of life for those affected.
