Trump to Lower Fuel Economy Standards in Urgent Announcement
UPDATE: President Donald Trump is set to announce a significant rollback of fuel economy standards established by the Biden administration, as confirmed by multiple sources. The announcement will take place at 2:30 p.m. EST today from the Oval Office, with high-profile executives from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis in attendance.
This urgent decision comes as the Trump administration seeks to align fuel standards with what they describe as “market realities.” According to sources who spoke anonymously to Bloomberg and The New York Times, the specifics of the proposal are still under wraps, but it is expected to reverse the stricter standards implemented by President Joe Biden.
Trump has criticized Biden’s fuel economy regulations as an “EV mandate,” arguing that the current standards are unachievable without a widespread transition to electric vehicles. The former president’s administration previously relaxed these standards during his first term, which had been tightened under former President Barack Obama.
In 2021, Biden increased fuel economy standards by 8% for model years 2024 and 2025, and by 10% for 2026 models. However, Trump argues that meeting these stringent requirements is impractical and has previously cut subsidies for electric vehicle purchases.
“As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities,”
said Ford CEO Jim Farley in a statement to Fox News. He emphasized that this decision could lead to significant advancements in carbon emissions and energy efficiency while maintaining consumer choice and affordability.
Trump hinted at this announcement during his final Cabinet meeting of the year, stating, “We’re bringing back the automobile business. I think we’ll be bigger than we’ve ever been in the auto business.” This statement underscores the administration’s commitment to revitalizing the automotive industry amid changing regulations.
As this situation develops, the implications for consumers, the automotive industry, and environmental policy remain significant. The proposed changes could shift the landscape for vehicle production and sales in the coming years, influencing both market dynamics and consumer choices.
Stay tuned for live updates following Trump’s announcement, as the implications of this policy shift could reshape the future of fuel economy standards and the auto industry as a whole.
