UPDATE: Airbus has just announced a significant drop in its 2023 delivery target due to a critical fuselage issue affecting the A320 aircraft line. The French aerospace giant will now deliver approximately 790 commercial planes this year, down from its original goal of 820.

The company identified a quality concern with metal panels located behind the cockpit on each side of the two forward doors. These panels have been found to be of incorrect thickness, necessitating inspections on 628 planes. This includes 168 aircraft already in service, 245 on assembly lines, and 215 in earlier stages of production, according to The Guardian.

This announcement follows a recent software issue impacting 6,000 planes during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which disrupted numerous flights. In a related incident on October 31, 15 passengers aboard a JetBlue flight were hospitalized after the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and made an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, while en route to Newark, New Jersey.

Officials have assured the public that this quality issue does not compromise flight safety. An Airbus source confirmed to the BBC, “The source of the issue has been identified, contained, and all newly produced panels conform to all requirements. Only inspections will determine where an aircraft may have panels with quality issues and the appropriate action to be taken.”

However, the repercussions are being felt in the stock market, with Airbus shares dropping more than 6.5% over the past week.

What happens next? Airbus will prioritize the inspections of the affected aircraft to ensure compliance and safety. Stakeholders and travelers alike are urged to stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.

This urgent announcement from Airbus underscores the ongoing challenges the aerospace industry faces, particularly in maintaining safety and quality amidst rising demand for air travel.
