Former Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández Freed After Trump Pardon
UPDATE: Former Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández has been released from prison following a pardon from President Donald Trump, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Hernández, who was sentenced to 45 years for his involvement in a drug trafficking operation, was freed from U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton in West Virginia on Monday.
The dramatic turn of events comes just as Hernández’s wife, Ana García, publicly thanked Trump via the platform X for the presidential pardon. “After almost four years of pain and difficult challenges, my husband Juan Orlando Hernández is a free man,” she posted, sharing an image of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons listing confirming his release.
Trump addressed Hernández’s pardon while traveling on Air Force One, stating, “I was asked by Honduras, many of the people of Honduras… They basically said he was a drug dealer because he was the president of the country.” His comments reflect a belief among some in Honduras that Hernández was unfairly targeted by political rivals and the current U.S. administration.
Hernández’s attorney, Renato Stabile, expressed gratitude for the pardon, calling it a correction of an injustice. He did not disclose Hernández’s current location but confirmed that the former president is relieved that the ordeal is over.
In February 2022, Hernández was arrested at the request of U.S. authorities shortly after the election of current President Xiomara Castro. In 2023, he was sentenced for taking bribes from drug traffickers, facilitating the smuggling of approximately 400 tons of cocaine to the United States. Despite the evidence, Hernández has consistently claimed his innocence and portrayed himself as a champion against drug trafficking.
During his sentencing, U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel criticized Hernández for using his power to protect drug trafficking networks, stating that he misled the public while using state resources to facilitate drug operations.
Hernández’s release does not guarantee a swift return to Honduras. Following Trump’s announcement, Attorney General Johel Zelaya stated that his office would pursue justice and put an end to impunity, without detailing potential charges against Hernández.
As the political landscape shifts, the implications of Trump’s pardon are significant. The timing of the pardon, just days before Honduras’ presidential election, has sparked debate about its potential influence on the electoral outcome, particularly benefiting the candidate from Hernández’s National Party, Nasry Asfura.
The political ramifications of this pardon will likely unfold in the coming days, with many watching to see how the current administration in Honduras responds to Hernández’s release. As this story develops, further updates will be provided.
