Skateboarder Terry Kennedy Set for Early Release on New Year’s Eve
UPDATE: Famed skateboarder Terry Kennedy is set to be released from prison on December 31, 2025, just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed that Kennedy, 40, will walk free earlier than scheduled due to having received sentence credit for good behavior.
Kennedy has been behind bars serving a 5-year prison sentence for an assault that tragically resulted in the death of fellow skater Josiah Kassahun. Authorities report that Kennedy will remain on supervised release until June 30, 2026, when he is expected to be fully discharged.
The incident that led to Kennedy’s conviction occurred on July 27, 2021Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Prosecutors stated that during a heated moment, Kennedy punched Kassahun, causing him to fall and suffer fatal injuries. The medical examiner determined that Kassahun, just 23 years old, died from multiple internal injuries sustained during the altercation.
In a surprising turn, Kennedy was acquitted of the murder charge in 2022 but was convicted on two counts of aggravated battery, leading to his consecutive five-year sentences. This dramatic legal saga has captured the attention of the skateboarding community and beyond.
Kennedy, known as a Long Beach legend, has left his mark on the skateboarding world, competing in prestigious events like the X Games and the Maloof Money Cup. He has also made appearances in various TV shows, films, and skateboarding video games, making him a recognizable figure in street skating.
As Kennedy prepares for his return to freedom in just 29 days, fans and supporters are eagerly anticipating how he will reintegrate into the skating scene and what this new chapter will mean for him personally.
Stay tuned for further updates as Kennedy’s release date approaches. His story continues to resonate, highlighting both the highs and lows of a life intertwined with fame and consequence.
