Urgent Nominations Open for Scheketa Hart-Burns Award in Aurora

URGENT UPDATE: Nominations for the prestigious Scheketa Hart-Burns Leader of the Year Award are now open in Aurora, with a deadline fast approaching this Friday, Dec. 5, 2025. This annual award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the Black community in Aurora.

The award celebrates those who exemplify Black excellence and demonstrate unwavering commitment to improving the lives of local residents. The recipient will be acknowledged as the 20th awardee during the 20th annual African American Heritage Dinner on Feb. 27, 2026.

This recognition is named in memory of the late Ald. Scheketa Hart-Burns, who made history as the first Black member of the Aurora City Council. Hart-Burns served for an impressive 31 years until her passing two years ago, and her legacy continues to inspire community leadership, equity, and empowerment. Notably, her birthday falls on Monday, Dec. 1, marking what would have been her 71st birthday.

The award aims to spotlight individuals who, like Hart-Burns, have made significant strides in civic engagement and community service. The African American Heritage Advisory Board is calling on citizens to recognize those who make a meaningful impact in Aurora’s Black community.
