Law Enforcement Shops for 417 Kids Ahead of Holiday Season
UPDATE: Law enforcement officials in Oklahoma City have launched a heartwarming initiative to prepare for the upcoming holiday season by shopping for 417 children in need. As the holiday season approaches, local authorities and Sunbeam Family Services are ensuring that these kids receive toys and gifts that could be the only ones they get this year.
On Wednesday, officers from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office began their shopping spree, gathering items for a major giveaway event scheduled for December. “For some of those families, this may be the only toys that they get,” stated SGT. Tara Hardin, emphasizing the importance of this initiative to the local community.
The event marks the 25th year of the grandparents raising grandchildren shopping event in partnership with Sunbeam Family Services. The culmination of this effort will be a festive gathering where Santa, elves, and even the Grinch will be present to distribute the gifts. “We are shopping for 417 kids today that will culminate in a huge event in December,” SGT. Hardin added.
Beyond the holiday shopping, Sunbeam Family Services provides essential support throughout the year. “We have a lot of wraparound services that this has expanded into, including mental health support for our grandparents and grandchildren if needed,” explained Brandi Rettman, Careteam Coordinator at Sunbeam Family Services. The organization also hosts year-round events, including back-to-school supplies and community activities, helping to strengthen families in need.
As officers meticulously reviewed each shopping list, they filled their carts with a variety of toys aimed at bringing joy to children of all ages. This annual event not only fills a crucial gap for families but also warms the hearts of those involved. “We don’t want families to have to choose between necessities and the fun when you’re a child,” SGT. Hardin noted. “Christmas should be fun. So there is a place where that hole can be filled.”
This initiative is not only about providing gifts; it serves as a reminder of the community’s commitment to supporting families in need during the holiday season. If you are a grandparent raising your grandchild and wish to get involved with Sunbeam Family Services, more information can be found on their website.
As the holiday season draws nearer, the urgency of this initiative highlights the importance of community support and the impact it has on the lives of families struggling to make ends meet. Stay tuned for further updates on this touching story as it develops.
