Food Stamp Cutoff Looms: Families Face Hunger Crisis This Saturday

URGENT UPDATE: Families across Western New York are bracing for a critical food stamp cutoff this Saturday, October 28, 2025, amid the ongoing federal government shutdown that has now extended for nearly a month. Maranda Johnson, a local mother, fears she will struggle to feed her family without her SNAP benefits, emphasizing, “You barely get by as it is.”
As the situation escalates, hunger relief agencies are preparing for a surge in demand. Lavelle Salter, a volunteer coordinator at FeedMore WNY in Buffalo, reports that the organization serves nearly 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, schools, and group homes throughout Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, and Chautauqua counties.
The impending cutoff is set to hit vulnerable families hard, with many relying on these benefits for daily sustenance. Rev. Mark E. Blue, who runs a food pantry at Second Baptist Church in Lackawanna, underscores the critical importance of SNAP benefits, stating, “The community we serve will be significantly impacted.”
At FeedMore’s warehouse in Buffalo, volunteers like Ameer Brown are working tirelessly to prepare food supplies, loading boxes onto pallets ahead of what could be a dramatic increase in need as the cutoff approaches. With food distribution already a lifeline for many, the potential loss of federal assistance is intensifying the urgency of the situation.
The government shutdown has left many families unsure about their futures, and hunger relief efforts are ramping up in response. FeedMore WNY is mobilizing resources to ensure they can assist as many families as possible, anticipating that the demand for food assistance will skyrocket once SNAP benefits are cut off.
As families prepare for what could be a significant hardship starting this weekend, the community is urged to come together. Local organizations are calling for donations and support to help bridge the gap when federal assistance ends.
Stay tuned for real-time updates on this developing story as the situation unfolds and the community responds to this urgent crisis.
